Medicare timing education
Working past 65? Verify how your coverage coordinates first
Do not assume that having an employer card automatically makes delaying Medicare penalty-free. Ask whether the coverage is based on current employment, who the primary payer is, and what documentation you will receive when that coverage ends.

Questions for the benefits administrator
- Is this coverage based on my current employment or someone else’s current employment?
- Which coverage pays first after I become eligible for Medicare?
- Is the prescription coverage considered creditable, and will I receive written notice?
- What exact date will active-employment coverage end?
- Whom should I contact before making or stopping HSA contributions?
Why the answer can vary
Medicare Secondary Payer rules use details such as the reason for Medicare entitlement, employer size, and whether coverage is tied to current employment. Retiree and COBRA coverage are not the same as active-employment coverage for every Medicare timing rule. Confirm the facts with the benefits administrator and Medicare.
